Sea

The Polish seaside to most people, are the so called 'Three Cities' , but in fact the Baltic coast stretches for over 700 kilometres , with large, filled with attractions, sea side towns, and top resorts with beautiful beaches, but also having oases of tranquility where it seems no tourists have been seen.

Between June and August the average temperature is above 22 degrees, those are the days when the sea belongs to the swimmers, days on which to take a relaxing stroll around the Gdansk Old Town, or to visit the Light Tower of Hel and overlook the whole area basking in the sun.

On the Baltic coast, those that love seafood have a great time, on the menu of every restaurant or beach snack bar all sorts of fish are presented, prepared in different ways but always having the same deliciously fresh taste.

Most popular resorts are Sopot, Gdansk, Gdynia, Miedzyzdroje, Leba, Kolobrzeg. Full of beauty and less crowded during the season is the semi-island of Hel.

What to see on the Baltic Sea Coast

Gdansk:
  • Royal Route
If you want to see most of Gdansk's monuments you should follow the Royal Route, passing along the Dluga street and Long Market. Every step of the way you will be seeing interesting, century old buildings such as Zlota Kamienica, City Hall, the renaissance house of Ferber dating back to 1560, the Lion Castle, the stately homes of the Czirenberg Family or the Schuman Family home with Zeuses statue on top of it.
  • The Neptune Fountain and Court of Artus
You can't leave Gdansk without seeing its symbol - the Neptune Fountain. This monument representing the mythical figure of the ruler of the sea is since 1633 in front of the Court of Artus. This court is one of the few that is still in its original state. One of its most interesting features is Europe's biggest tile oven, 10 meters high and containing 520 tiles.
  • Three Crosses Monument
This monument honors the fallen shipyard workers during political unrest in 1970. The monument consists of three huge 42 meters high crosses, each weighing 42 tons.

What to do on the Baltic Sea Coast

Gdansk:
  • Museum of Amber
On a rainy summer day, a good way to spend the day is in the Museum of Amber. This is the only place in Poland, so far, where you can learn about the secrets of amber and its origins dating back 40 million years ago, or enter the pre-historic forest and take in the fresh smells.
  • The Crane (Zuraw Gdanski)
A stroll along the boulevard and seeing the Crane – the symbol of Gdansk's harbor tradition, built in 1442-1444 , is the oldest intact harbor lifter. Many centuries it served to haul cargo on shore, now it's the headquarter of the Central Maritime Museum.
  • Dominican Fair
The best thing to do is to visit Gdansk during August, when the whole town lives up during the yearly Saint Dominik Festival. This traditional festival dates back for 750 years, and its full of interesting attractions like the films festival, the bread festival, and the Amber festival.
  • Lighthouse Gdansk New Harbor
27 meter high lighthouse was built as a copy of the famous Cleveland lighthouse in the USA, erected in 1871. On top you have a magnificent view of Gdansk.
  • Oliwa Cathedral
Organ music lovers have to visit this Cathedral. All year round you can listen to the organ made out of 7876 pipes, and if you are lucky you might be around for the International Festival of Organ music.
Sopot:
  • Monte Casino Street
Sopot is the most popular sea side resort on the Baltic with its main street called Heroes Monte Cassino , or "Monciak" as the locals call it. This street has plenty of bars and restaurants, galleries and shops. It's the favorite place for tourists and locals alike.
  • Molo and beach
The Molo is Sopot's most striking feature, with 512 meters this boardwalk is the biggest wooden one in Europe. The boardwalk cuts the beautiful sandy beach of Sopot in two.
  • Krzywy Dom
Walking along the main street in Sopot you might want to stop a bit longer at number 53. This is the 'Krzywy Dom' and its funny and original design has something of a resemblance to a Gaudi project.
  • Forest Opera
This amphitheatre is the setting for the yearly music festival attracting both Polish and foreign music stars. The acoustic of this theatre is one of the best and most beautiful around.
  • Aquapark
For people that love to swim the Aquapark is perfect. Many attractions await its visitors, for example it has the longest 'wild river' in Poland measuring 71 meters. Or splash down one of the many water slides.
Gdynia:
  • Dar Pomorza
The main attractions in Gdynia are the boats moored along the seaside. Two of its most famous are the sailing boat 'Dar Pomorza' which is a museum as well, and the “ORP Błyskawica” destroyer. Yearly more than 100.000 tourists come to visit.
  • Aquarium Gdynia
The biggest collection of fish and other water animals in Poland, more than 1500 in total. In the museum section of the Aquarium an array of flora and fauna of the sea are shown and also contains more than 50 different aquariums, some as big as 16000 litres.
  • Semi Island Hel
The semi-island of Hel stretches for 35 kilometers, beautiful sandy beaches and small villages that seem to have stopped in time. Famous are Jastarnia, Chalupy, Kuznica, Jurata, and Hel.
Hel:
  • The Light House
At the end of the semi island there is a huge light house. Its reach is 17 sea miles with good weather, and it uses a 1000W bulb. To get the best view its well worth the climb up.
  • Fokarium
Whole year round you can visit the seal sanctuary at the sea station at Hel, they are treated here and when fit and healthy released back into the sea. Presently there are 5 seals in house, of which one is called 'Bubas'.
Miedzyzdroje:

Resort that is famous for its yearly film festival, at which you can meet Poland's film stars. There is even a Promenade of Stars where the hands of those film stars are planted forever in the pavement. During the summer this town is full of life. Nearby you have the Wolinski National Park and the reserve where aurochs are kept.

Leba:

Great place for waters ports and a beautiful long sandy beach and close to the Słowiński National Park with its rolling sand dunes called the white mountains. A few years ago a cowboy village was established in Leba where from June to September you can visit.

Kolobrzeg:

For years it was associated with the military song festival, but today it is the most popular spa resort on the Baltic coast. The micro climate is prefect to relax and let yourself pamper in the many health clinics.
